the helper being helped

One day my child, not sure which one, asked how can I do the work I do?  I was asked how can I listen to other peoples problems and listen to the horror stories without loosing my mind?  My original answer is that I enjoy helping people.   A bigger reason is that I learn a lot from the people I work with.  It's always educational I have learned what it's like to live other places, I've learned about medical conditions that I otherwise would've never heard of which causes me to do research.  I have been given recipes, trained on the proper way to raise plants, other cultures, ethnic groups, the life of living in large family and the life of being an only child, the life of a lesbian woman and the life of a gay man.  I guess I do what I do for the educational experience, because people are beautiful and interesting and yes because I love helping people.  Who do you do what you do?
